    What Do Dermatologists Do?

As a dermatologist, you will identify and treat more than 3,000 conditions and help improve the quality of life for people suffering from a wide range of conditions, from minor, annoying ones to serious, life-threatening ones. The most common skin conditions that dermatologists treat include:

    • Acne
    • Alopecia areata (small patches of hair loss)
    • Atopic dermatitis (eczema)
    • Clogged skin follicles
    • Buildup of bacteria and dead skin cells
    • Psoriasis
    • Rosacea
    • Skin cancer
    • Vitiligo (loss of skin color)

Dermatologists must similarly be able to diagnose and treat such rare skin illnesses as:

    • Actinic pruritus (itchy rash caused by sun exposure)
    • Argyria (skin discolouration due to silver accumulation in the body)
    • Chromidrosis (tinted sweat)
    • Epidermolysis bullosa (a connective tissue complaint that causes brittle skin)
    • Harlequin ichthyosis (thickened, hard patches or plaques on the skin)
    • Lamellar ichthyosis (reddened, flaking outer layer of skin)
    • Necrobiosis lipoidica (rash and ulcers on the shins)

Many skin conditions are not life-threatening, but they can significantly impact a person’s overall well-being and happiness. Conditions such as acne and psoriasis, in particular, can cause nervousness, depression, and other psychological problems. By treating skin conditions, dermatologists can significantly improve the quality of life of their patients.

Dermatologists are also true lifesavers. They are the first line of defence against the most common type of cancer: skin cancer. Almost 100,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma each year in the United States, and about one in twelve people die from the disease.

Lifestyle and underlying medical conditions can negatively impact the condition of the skin. Other skin problems can be caused by:

    • Bacteria in pores or hair follicles
    • Diseases affecting the immune system, kidneys, or thyroid gland
    • Contact with allergens, infectious diseases, and other environmental factors
    • Diabetes
    • Fungi or parasites
    • Genetics
    • Medicines
    • Sun exposure
    • Viruses

    How to Become a Dermatologist

To become a dermatologist, you must complete your medical education at an accredited medical school like the American University of the Caribbean (AUC) College of Medicine. Afterward earning a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree, graduates must complete a residency, which is required for obtaining a medical license. Prospective dermatologists must complete a foundation year of training in a broad clinical subspecialty (usually internal medicine) before implementation a three-year residency in dermatology.

After completing their dermatology training, a physician may become board specialized by the American Panel of Dermatology, the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, or the Regal College of Physicians and Doctors of Canada. A board-certified dermatologist may earn the acronym FAAD, which attitudes for Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. Physicians may then continue their training to specialise in one of the four main subspecialties of dermatology, detailed below.
